Summer weather that can edge into the 40°Cs and an abundance of Crown land, make the Sea-to-Sky corridor ideal for outdoor marijuana grow operations.

The Sea-to-Sky Regional Police Service, which covers the corridor and Bowen Island, is asking outdoor recreation fans and local pilots to keep an eye out for patches of the illegal greenery.

According to a release issued by Cpl. Paul Vadik of the Pemberton detachment, significant quantities of drugs are destroyed every year as a result of tips from the public.

Police are encouraging people who come across outdoor grow ops this summer to report any GPS locations to the closest detachment in the area or forward their information to Crime Stoppers.

According to Cpl. Vadik, outdoor grow sites are usually large in scale and linked to organized crime.

Members of the Sea to Sky Police Service, in partnership with RCMP Air Services, and the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police will be patrolling remote areas in an effort to curb this illegal activity.

VOP meeting change to accommodate AGM

Fans of municipal politics take note: The next Village of Pemberton meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5. The meeting has been pushed back from its usual 7 p.m. start time to accommodate the village’s annual general meeting.

The council meeting will take place at the usual location, 1350 Aster Street, while the AGM will be held at The Pony Espresso starting at 7 p.m. A requirement of the Municipal Government Act, the AGM represents basic housekeeping for the VOP.

The more interesting meeting will happen immediately after at the same location, when this current administration will hold its first town hall meeting. The meeting is open to all members of the community and is a chance to field questions and voice concern to Pemberton’s elected representatives.
