Two Whistler residents were among the 27 B.C. coaches nominated for the 3M Coaching Canada Awards, which have been presented to outstanding coaches and community leaders since 1989.
Ski coach Jim Pollock and gymnastics coach Sheila Mozes are the Whistlerites nominated.
This year more than 97 nominations were received from athletes, officials, parents and administrators throughout Canada.
3M, in collaboration with the Coaching Association of Canada, honours the top male and female coaches in both high performance and developmental sport. The four winners each receive a $1,000 coach education bursary, and the runners-up receive $500.
The winners will be decided at a Coaching Awards Dinner on Oct. 20 as part of a three-day Sport Leadership 2001 conference that weekend at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.
Pollock is a Level 3 alpine ski coach who has spent the past six years coaching members of the national team, including Whistler?s Britt Janyk and Fernie?s Emily Brydon. He has been selected as the head coach of the national team competing at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He is a regular presenter at Alpine Canada?s bi-annual coaches workshops and is a 3M NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) Course Conductor.
Mozes has been coaching gymnastics for the past 34 years at the community, regional and provincial levels, as well as in elementary and secondary schools. She helped to grow Whistler Gymnastics as program director, as well as community gymnastics programs through Whistler Parks and Recreation.
She is a 3M NCCP Level 3 certified artistic gymnastics coach on women?s apparatus, as well as a 3M NCCP Level 1 Course Conductor and Level 1 judge.
