Beginning next week, Highway 99 will be closed in the pre-dawn hours as road crews work on the Nordic Hill area.

The highway will be closed from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. between Nordic Drive and Hillcrest Drive at the entrance to Alta Vista.

And drivers can also expect delays of up to 30 minutes in the same area between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The closures and delays will take place from Monday, Aug. 10 to Friday Aug. 14.

"That's all they've scheduled to date," said project manager Jay Porter with the Ministry of Transportation.

The work is part of the $10 million ministry upgrades to the highway in the Whistler area, which include widening the shoulder from Function Junction to the village.

The work on Nordic Hill is designed to lessen the grade, which in turn will prevent cars from sliding off the road in the winter.

It includes building a retaining wall on the west side of the highway.

"It's not going to have such a steep grade," explained Porter. "I don't know if it's going to look much different as far as you can tell by looking at the road.

"The whole idea is because in the winter time when it ices up you get some slow moving traffic, mainly the bigger vehicles like buses, that just slide off the road and then they block traffic, so it's just to rectify that, to prevent that from happening."

The entire project is scheduled to be finished by October.
