Public warned not to travel alone at night

Eva Lake resident assaulted

By Clare Ogilvie

Police are warning people to travel with a friend at night following the sex assault of a woman on Eva Lake Road this week.

“We are warning people,” said RCMP Cst. Devon Jones of Sea to Sky Regional Police Services.

“If it has happened once then it certainly is a possibility that it can happen again even though we haven’t had any other calls prior to this.

“We just want to make sure that people understand that late at night people shouldn’t be walking in isolated areas by themselves.

“The good thing about living in Whistler is that it is a very safe community, but we are not immune to these types of incidents.”

Police were called to a home on Eva Lakes Road Jan.23 about 3:20 a.m., where a woman reported that she had been assaulted and threatened by an unknown male outside her home.

The woman said she had taken a bus from the village to Eva Lake Road and after exiting the bus, near her home she was attacked from behind.

She fought back and screamed and frightened away the attacker.

Her assailant was about 5’9” and wore a dark balaclava, dark gloves with rubber grips and a dark fleece jacket, possibly with a logo. The woman said she also noticed the man had blonde or light coloured bushy eyebrows.

Jones said they are hoping anyone who exited the bus who might have seen anything will contact them to help with the investigation. Of particular interest to police are two males and a female who exited the bus at the same location. The female is described as wearing a burgundy scarf and pink and white toque and one of the males had a black trench coat on,

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP in Whistler at 604-932-3044 or call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Bar staff attacked with knife

On Jan.21 the Whistler RCMP were called to Garfinkel’s Bar after a young man threatened staff with a knife.

RCMP Cst Devon Jones said while weapons offences are fairly rare in Whistler they do happen.

“Weapons in the bar scene have certainly be evident in the Lower Mainland and, of course, people from the Lower Mainland do come up to Whistler to enjoy the bar scene so weapons in bars do happen here, they are just not as common,” he said

Just before police got to the bar the suspect fled with friends towards Main Street. With some help from hotel and security staff police located the individuals and arrested the young man, charging him with assault with a weapon.

The knife was not recovered.

He was later released on condition that he attends court in North Vancouver.

No one at the bar was injured.

Drug Trafficking

A Whistler resident, Cory Kearley, 26, has been arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance after being observed by RCMP officers in the village Jan.19.

He was seen standing in front of Moe Joe’s nightclub allegedly selling marijuana to another male.

Under his current conditions the village is now a no-go area for Kearley.

The other man in the alleged transaction was identified as a 30-year-old male from the U.S. He was not formally charged.

Stabbing in Pemberton

Two Pemberton men have been arrested in a stabbing incident in the 1400 block Pemberton Farm Road in the early morning hours of Jan. 21.

A 21-year-old man was arrested for forcible entry and assault while a 17-year-old is facing charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Both were released on strict bail conditions. They will make their first court appearance on Feb. 22.

The 17-year-old victim, who is not being identified, was released from Lions Gate Hospital Monday and did not require surgery.

The investigation continues and more arrests are expected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP at 604 932 3044 or call Crimestoppers at 1 800 222 8477.

Local criminal arrested for Vancouver car jacking

Twenty-seven-year-old Joshua Lundstrom’s free reign has come to an end.

The Squamish man who was recently charged with several offences stemming from criminal activity in Whistler and Squamish is now in custody after allegedly car jacking a 2006 red Dodge Caravan at knife point from its 50-year-old owner on Robson Street on Jan.19 at 2:30 a.m.

Lundstrom had been released from police custody earlier in the day.

Vancouver police were alerted to the theft and put out a description of the vehicle.

West Vancouver police saw the vehicle and noticed it being driven erratically on the Upper Levels highway. They couldn’t catch it but alerted the Squamish RCMP.

Squamish officers caught up with it at Porteau Cove but Lundstrom refused to stop. Police set up a spike belt at Murrin Park and the van was finally brought to a halt.

Lundstrom was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and prohibited driving.

At the time of the incident he was free on several conditions and was awaiting trial on criminal charges.

He is being held in custody on the most recent charges and has been transferred to Vancouver to face further charges of robbery with a weapon and uttering threats.
