Garrett Milan's professional hockey career got off to a rollicking start on Sept. 22.
The 24-year-old Whistlerite recently went across the pond to link up with Debreceni Hoki Klub (DHK), a Hungarian-based team in the MOL Liga. The nine-team circuit also includes clubs in Romania and Slovakia.
In his first game as a professional, Milan scored DHK's first goal 9:46 into the contest as the club emerged 3-2 over DAB-Docler. DHK is tied for first in the league after winning its first five games of the season, three in regulation and two in overtime.
Milan, a former BCHL Interior Conference rookie of the year for the 2008-09 season, most recently played with the NCAA's St. Cloud State Huskies in Minnesota, scoring 13 points in 73 games over four seasons.
Triathlon Canada investigating Ironman Canada athlete
Triathlon Canada is launching an investigation into an athlete for "misconduct" at the Subaru Ironman Canada in July.
The organization announced on Sept. 9 that as the governing body, it "has strong policies in place against the alleged behaviour," according to a release.
When asked for further details about the investigation, a Triathlon Canada spokesman said the organization would not reveal any information that was not disclosed in the release, including the identity of the athlete.
"In fairness to all those involved in the situation, Triathlon Canada will be keeping all aspects of the investigation confidential until all due diligence has been performed, and the results of the review has been communicated to the impacted parties," the release stated.
Ironman Canada has seen controversy already this year.
Ironman Canada organizers announced late last month that Squamish-based competitor Julie Miller had been disqualified in the women's 40-44 age group and would no longer attend the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
According to the Vancouver Sun, Miller was also stripped of a July 2014 victory in an Ironman 70.3 event in Vancouver, though she retained her age-group win at the 2014 Long Distance Triathlon Championships in China after an investigation.
Miller has maintained her innocence.
"I did not cheat in the recent Whistler Ironman competition, nor would I ever cheat or have I ever cheated," she told the Sun.
Clark wins Westside Wheel-Up
Chris Clark completed the Westside Wheel-Up with plenty of time to spare, besting the competition by nearly four minutes.
Clark finished the 22nd running of the mountain bike race in a time of one hour, 23 minutes, 27 seconds (1:23:27) to best Darcy Trevelyan by 3:45 and Greg McDonnell by 3:51 in the 70-rider men's division.
Robin O'Neill likewise enjoyed a cushion on the women's side, finishing the course in 1:46:05 to knock off Jenna Fox by 7:43 and Gloria Addario by 8:57.
The junior men's race had a wild finish, with Michael Murdoch edging Tristan Sanders by two seconds. Murdoch posted a winning time of 1:39:04.
Stephanie Denroche won the junior women's race with a time of 2:26:26.
