Putting the S2S Trail on the Map

With the help of Councillor Gordon McKeever, the idea of a mountain bike trail stretching from Squamish to Darcy is one small step closer to a reality.

Whistler council threw its support behind the project on Monday night, appointing McKeever as the elected official to champion the cause.

Council will also be setting aside $35,000 in 2004 budget for a project coordinator position in the municipality.

"In the next seven years there’s not going to be an easier time, so let’s start now," said McKeever.

The route will use the Valley Trail through Whistler with the Flank Trail as an alternate route.

One of the first priorities is to finalize the 150-kilometre route and get it legitimized on a map in Victoria, said McKeever.

Since the idea of a Sea to Sky Trail was revived in recent months, councils in Pemberton and Squamish and the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District have all supported the project. They have also signed key elected officials and staff members to the estimated $2-million project. The next step is to make the presentation to First Nations.
