The afternoon session of last week’s Cascadia Mayors Council focused on transportation issues in the Cascadia corridor.

The CMC passed a resolution calling state, provincial and federal governments to support the $12-billion High Speed Rail Act, which would increase funding and ease international border restrictions on the Amtrak Cascades rail service that runs between Eugene, Ore., and Vancouver, via Portland and Seattle.

More than $550-million has already been committed by various levels of governments and businesses for rail-connection improvements to address growing congestion at regional airports and highways along the 750-kilometre corridor.

The Cascadia region is expected to see a 50 per cent increase in population growth over the next 20 years.
