Queen of the Rail on March 8

Sparks were flying on Saturday as 70 skiers and snowboarders turned out for the third King of the Rails contest of the season at the base of Blackcomb.

The athletes themselves cast votes for the winners in each category, and received cash prizes based on the number of people they were up against. All participants also had the opportunity to win draw prizes, including a Nintendo Wii, Telus music players and phones, and skis and snowboards donated by Atomic and Sapients.

In Ski Male 16 and Over, Frank G.P. won the most votes and a cash purse of $65. Kris Lessard, competing in Snowboard Male 16 and Over, won a cash prize of $100. In Ski Youth 15 and Under, Ryan Hartlin was first and won $15, while Dan Stubbs won $15 as the top snowboarder 15 and Under.

Lynsey Ashdown was the top female snowboarder, winning $20, while Jenny Strong was the top female skier and won $15.

The overall king of the rail with the most votes, but no prize money, was Sunaru Asai.

The next event is the girls-only Queen of the Rail competition, taking place on Saturday, Mar. 8. The cost is $15 to enter, and registration gets underway at 5 p.m. at the Whistler Kids desk. The contest runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and as usual the winners are decided by votes cast by the athletes themselves.
