Council tabled a recommendation by staff Monday for a railway crossing signal at Rainbow Park and issued instructions to negotiate a better deal with BC Rail. BC Rail says a crossing signal without arms would cost the municipality $55,500, $32,000 of which would be for materials. A signal with arms would cost $250,000. Parks Department staff had recommended the signal because the main entrance to the park crosses the rail line at one of the faster sections of track. The signal was intended to minimize the risk to park users. However, councillor Bill Murray questioned the cost of the signal. Mayor Ted Nebbeling questioned why the municipality should have to pay for the signal, at a legal crossing, when it didn’t have to pay for the signal at Function Junction. "These people have never paid a dime of income tax in this town," Nebbeling added. "We should go back and tell them we want them to pay for a signal with arms."
