Fans of Victoria-based RantMusic know how infectious the six-piece group’s musical mix of folk, punk, jazz, Celtic and gypsy styles can be. Fiddle player and backup vocalist Sara Hart casts a spell with each intense swipe of her bow, possessing the room to dance as singer Ramsay Reid weaves his twisted yarns.

It’s definitely a step outside the radio norm. The best the band itself can do as a description is "Tom Waits meets the Dead Kennedy’s in Eastern Europe." Perhaps that’s what spending 15 months together on a bus will do for a group of people.

Shortly after their formation in Nelson, B.C. three years ago, the band (then called McGnarley’s Rant) took to the road in a refurbished school bus, touring their unique sound throughout North America.

To date, the band has played more than 500 shows, including a lengthy tour of Europe this past year. It was during an appearance in Belgium that they officially changed their name, spurred on by the desire to clarify that they were not primarily a Celtic band, though there are undeniable Celtic influences in their music.

The band recently released their second album, Kamikaze Syllables, a mouthful of a title befitting the complex and unusual musical style. After playing their hometown, the appearance at the Boot this Monday will be the second stop on a marathon tour with dates across Canada and the U.S., as far as the Maritimes and back.

RantMusic is a perfect fit with the Boot’s eclectic Monday Madness roster. Come by, grab a copy of Kamikaze Syllables , raise a pint , and let RantMusic possess you to dance until you howl at the moon. Tickets $5 at the door.
