If you value your bike, take care: in recent weeks there's been a rash of thefts of bikes of all kinds, including 15 new files that were opened between July 4 and 10 — far more than the already high average for the community.

There is no pattern to the thefts. Two high-end downhill bikes valued at $5,000 and $6,500 were stolen from a bike rack on Spruce Grove Circle between the evening of July 7 and morning of July 8. The bikes were only locked by their front wheels, which were left behind. Two others bikes worth $4,000 were stolen that were not locked.

In another case, the RCMP received a report of a bike theft in progress after a suspect rode away from an unlocked Norco bike outside a local bike shop around 8:30 a.m. on July 10. The suspect was described as a male in his early 20s, with black shorts, black t-shirt and black sunglasses. On investigation, it was determined that another bike that was locked outside the store had been taken after its lock was cut.

The RCMP is urging bike owners to take precautions.

Man charged with B&E, assault

A dispute between friends over a girl turned bloody last week, as police received a 911 call from a resident on the 7000 block of Nesters Road just after 1:30 a.m. on July 4. Both the resident and a neighbour called police after a man broke a window to gain access to the residence, and assaulted the occupant. When the police arrived they found the male outside with blood on his face and on his hands.

The suspect, a 34-year-old male from Japan, was still inside the home, and is facing charges of breaking and entering, assault causing bodily harm and mischief. The victim, also from Japan, was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre where he was treated for a broken nose and released.

Man out $350 in Craigslist fraud

A male who rented a place online is out $350 after sending a money transfer to a couple renting a room on Craigslist for July. The male arrived, only to discover that the occupants of the house had no knowledge of the rental, and that "Ashleigh and David" did not live there. The male reported the fraud to police on July 4.

Male sought for questioning after inappropriate behaviour

At 8 p.m. on July 8, the parents of a 17-year-old girl contacted the Whistler RCMP to report suspicious activity that occurred to their daughter at roughly 2 p.m. that afternoon. The girl was in the water at Lost Lake Park with three friends when a male with a video camera appeared and told them to say hi to the camera. He then put the camera up to one of the girl's breasts, then proceeded to swim around the girls while filming.

The RCMP is looking for information to identify the male involved. He is described as a man in his early 20s with dark brown hair, average build and a tan complexion.

If you saw anything, contact the RCMP at 604-932-3044.

Owner to be fined in logging truck rollover

The owner of a logging truck with insufficient brakes and no insurance faces numerous fines after the fully loaded vehicle rolled over on Highway 99 near the Lillooet Lake Road north of Pemberton on July 9. The incident took place just before noon and traffic was reduced to single lane alternating traffic for more than eight hours as the vehicle and logs were removed. The driver, who is not the owner of the vehicle, sustained non life-threatening injuries to his head and neck in the crash.

The owner of the vehicle, a 49-year-old from Squamish, faces a $598 fine.

Handgun, cash missing in storage room theft

On July 9, the Pemberton RCMP received a call after a storage locker was broken into in the industrial park. The theft was discovered at 3 p.m. and reported to police at 6 p.m. Missing from the locker is a semi-automatic Smith and Wesson pistol, $7,000 in cash, and other equipment and tools. The total loss is estimated over $9,000.
