Drivers reminded kids return to schools Sept. 2

The RCMP has a new program underway to coincide with the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Traffic Services and the Community Policing Section and the Whistler/Pemberton Auxiliaries will be on the road that day emphasizing the importance of wearing seat belts and obeying the road signs.

McDonald’s has supplied the Whistler/Pemberton RCMP with free ice-cream coupons that will be given to children who are seen to be wearing their seatbelts.

The objective of the program is to educate motorists and their families about road safety laws and to reinforce the positive relationships between the RCMP and the community.

The program will continue through the month of September.

Students are encouraged to stop, look and listen and make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets, and to use designated crossing points and follow pedestrian traffic signs.

Parents are reminded that the playground zone on Lorimer Road has a speed limit of 30 km/h and is in effect 365 days a year.

The school zone speed limit on Portage Road in Pemberton is in effect on school days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Traffic fines double in school and playground zones and begin at $230.

RCMP seek info on assault

On Aug. 21, the Whistler RCMP received a complaint of an assault in day lot 5 that occurred between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

According to the complainant, she was walking to work along Lorimer Road when she observed a male punching an unidentified female in the back of her head. The complainant said the female appeared to be in trouble and attempted to help her.

When she got to the scene of the assault, the male punched the complainant in the face, fracturing her nose.

She fought the male off and pulled the female away from the area. While exiting the area, the victim told the complainant that her name was "Rachael". She may have a French accent.

Rachael left the scene, and the complainant went to the police station to make her report.

The police are looking for any witnesses in the case, and for Rachael to make herself known. If you have any information, contact the RCMP at 604-932-5204.

Speed zone changes

The Whistler/Pemberton RCMP would like to remind the public that the 60 km/h speed zone is now in effect from Meadow Lane in Alpine Meadows to just past the Cougar Mountain turn off.

The speed limit has been changed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h due to public concern over excessive traffic noise.

North of the Cougar Mountain turn-off the speed limit remains 80 km/h.

There is no sign on the northbound side of the road as of yet but drivers are advised to be aware that a new sign will be put in place soon.
