RCMP continue to investigate Squamish highway death

The Squamish RCMP still don't know how lifetime local Alexander Larsen came to be lying on Highway 99 in the early hours of Feb. 7, where he was run over and killed by a northbound bus at 4:30 a.m.

It was a dark, wet night and Larsen was wearing dark clothing. Still, some people spotted him and the RCMP received three calls. They responded, but just as a police cruiser was arriving at the location, about 100 metres north of Garibaldi Way on Highway 99, a northbound B.C. Transit bus struck the 26-year-old.

The police car itself nearly ran over Larsen, but the officer quickly pulled the car into the other lane when they came across him.

Larsen was transported to Squamish General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The bus driver is not considered at fault.

The RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident, including the possibility that Larsen, a father of two, may have been injured prior to the contact with the bus.

It's also not known why drivers contacted the RCMP after spotting Larsen, but did not stop to try to assist or block the lane until emergency services could arrive.

Friends have created a Facebook site, "In loving memory of Alexander Larsen" to post photos and memories of Larsen. Many were concerned that people had seen him on the road but did nothing to help him.

Earlier in the evening Larsen was at a birthday party for his cousin. He was also reportedly ejected from a pub for intoxication. However, according to a post on Facebook he left the Grizzly Pub before 2 a.m. and was not "in the condition where I would think he could of passed out on the road."

Larsen is predeceased by his mother. Surviving family are currently planning memorial services.
