RCMP investigate credit card fraud

The Whistler/Pemberton RCMP are asking businesses to be on the lookout for credit card fraud, and to take steps to ensure that the person using the card is the rightful owner.

Various individuals appear to have obtained credit card information and credit cards, and have been using these cards to make purchases throughout Whistler village.

To combat the fraud, the RCMP is urging more training and education for frontline employees. Employees are being encouraged to ask for photo identification when presented with a credit card and to compare signatures to verify the card belongs to the user.

Some of the criminals are also using high-tech means to rewrite the coding on credit cards, and the RCMP are urging businesses to ensure that the information on the card, such as card number and expiry date, matches the information that appears on a computer after being swiped.

Several local hotels are participating in a Be On the Lookout For (BOLF) system that allows them to share information about possible fraudulent activity in a timely fashion. For more information, contact Clive Hamdorff, the Loss Prevention Manager for the Westin Hotel, at cliveh@westinwhistler.com.

Suspicious activity should be reported to the RCMP at 604-932-3044.
