Vancouver kayaker killed on Ashlu

The body of a 36-year-old kayaker from Vancouver was discovered by Squamish Search and Rescue and the Squamish RCMP shortly after he was reported missing on Sunday, Sept. 26.

The man was reported missing when he failed to show up at a pick-up point.

The man’s body was found a short distance from his kayak. The investigation is continuing.

Authorities are still looking for the body of a Vancouver hiker who fell into the Ashlu and was swept away in late July.

Humans a factor in bear calls

The Whistler-Pemberton RCMP attended 12 bear calls in the Whistler area from Sept. 25 to Sept. 27, including two bears that were stuck in open dumpsters. Nine of the other 10 calls involved bears getting into garbage left out by people. None of the bears were killed.

The Whistler RCMP would like to remind residents that bears are active in the village at this time of year as they try to bulk up for the winter months. For a list of common bear attractants and advice on how to proof your home, visit www.bearsmart.com.

In addition to the bears calls last week, the RCMP made three drug seizures, attended four motor vehicle incidents (including one where alcohol was a factor), arrested two people for being drunk in public, and handled six noise complaints, two fights and issued two 24-hour driving prohibitions.
