RCMP: thief arrested and charged

Stephen Hosmart arrested for breaking into vehicle parked at Whistler restaurant

Police in Vancouver have arrested and charged Stephen Hosmart, a 21-year-old from Vancouver for breaking into a vehicle at a Whistler restaurant on June 21. In that incident Hosmart allegedly smashed the rear window of the vehicle and took a suitcase and briefcase containing an iPad and a wallet. He later used the credit card to obtain cash and goods at three stores in Whistler, and attempted to purchase items at two other stores.

Hosmart was captured on video surveillance during his spree, which helped identify him. He is being charged for the theft as well as several other charges in the city.

Police seek information on knife-wielding suspect

On Oct. 1 at 12:30 a.m. the police received a report from a citizen who was suspicious after being approached by a male who said he was looking for his friend, and showed him a photo of another male. The person noticed that the individual was carrying a red X-Acto knife, and didn't answer.

The male continued southbound over the Ted Nebbeling bridge.

About 30 minutes later the police received another call from a pedestrian in the village. A man, who fit the first suspect's description and was wearing also jeans and a black hoodie, told a witness he had been stabbed, and showed a stab or slash wound to his chest. His hands were bloody and he had a cut on his arm. The witness offered to call for help, but the man left and was last seen running up the stairs near a hotel.

The police attended with a police dog but were unable to locate the suspect. They also checked with the Whistler Health Care Centre that evening, but nobody matching the male's description came in. The wounds are not believed to be life threatening, and police believe they may have been self-inflicted.

If you have any information, contact the RCMP at 604-932-3044 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Man arrested for village assault

In between calls regarding the male with the knife, the police received a call about a male that was unconscious with a cut on his forehead. The police attended, and found that the suspect in the attack was known to witnesses. The injured man was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre for stitches and the suspect was found nearby and arrested. He will make his first appearance on an assault charge on Nov. 28.

Man arrested, again, after threatening police

A man who is becoming quite well known to police was arrested at a local nightclub Sept. 29  after the door staff refused to let him in. He became verbally abusive to staff, and when police arrived he was arrested for breaching an order not to consume alcohol, and held until he court appear in court. The 24-year-old male was arrested in August for stealing and crashing a vehicle off Old Gravel Road, then breaking into a shed containing wine. A few weeks later the male turned himself in for public intoxication.

Bikes continue to be stolen

While mountain bike season may be nearly done, bike theft season is still in full swing in Whistler.

On Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. the police were informed of two thefts in an underground storage area on the 3,300 block of Ptarmigan Place. The thief gained entry to the storage by bending back the door hinge, and then cut through the locks securing a Jamis valued at $800 and a Kona valued at $1,200. The theft took place between 6 p.m. the previous evening and 6 a.m. that morning.

The police also received another report on Oct. 2 about a pair of bike thefts from a car port in Bear Ridge that took place on Sept. 26. A Norco Fluid worth $1,100 and a Kona hardtail worth $1,300 were taken.
