The Whistler RCMP is issuing a warning that they're going to be focusing on common traffic infractions over the next week. Morning and evening, officers will be conducting speed checks along Highway 99 between Emerald Estates and Alpine Meadows, where the posted speed limit is 60km/h. As well, teams in the village will be looking for drivers rolling through stop signs and using electronic devices in the village.
Police investigate threats to photographer
The Whistler RCMP received a call at 8 p.m. on June 25 from a male who told them that he was threatened online. He also alleged that his photographs were taken from his website and reused without his permission. The RCMP recommended he take the copyright issue to small claims court, and are investigating the threats.
Cyclist injured after hitting vehicle
On June 26, a cyclist who failed to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Alpine and Drifter Way struck a vehicle on the passenger side, and was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre. He was wearing a helmet at the time.
There are no charges for the driver or the cyclist, and the RCMP are reminding cyclists to obey the rules of the road.
Logging truck ticketed for speeding
The RCMP received a dangerous driving call just after noon on June 27 regarding a logging truck that was speeding and passing vehicles in the right lane. The RCMP attended and ticketed the driver, a 53-year-old from Squamish, for speeding.
Male facing charges for assaulting a police officer
Just after midnight on June 28, the RCMP attended a domestic dispute in the 8300 block of Chalet Drive that was called in by at least three neighbours.
A couple was in a verbal dispute when the police arrived, at which point a 26-year-old Whistler male allegedly threw a beer can and a broom at police, and then resisted arrest. Meanwhile the 22-year-old female in the argument attempted to intervene in the arrest, and was arrested for obstruction. The male is facing charges of resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and uttering threats.
Bikes stolen from home
The Whistler RCMP responded to a break-and-enter call at 9 a.m. on June 30 after four bikes were stolen from a home overnight. The four bikes had high-end components and a combined value of roughly $30,000.
Taken from the property were a Rocky Mountain Altitude, Slayer and Element, all with upgraded components, as well as a Trek Remedy.
The thief or thieves likely gained access by using an item found in the car parked outside.
The owners were home at the time of the theft.
The RCMP are reminding people not to leave items like keys or garage door openers in vehicles, because they can be used to gain entry to homes.
Woman treated for suspected overdose
At 5:30 a.m. on July 1, the Whistler RCMP assisted an emergency call regarding a potential overdose on St. Anton Way, providing aid to other emergency services. The woman was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre.
It's believed the 25-year-old female took MDMA, also known Ecstasy.
Owners suspect dog stolen
The owners of a French bulldog called the police at 10:30 a.m. on July 1 after their dog went missing from their backyard area. The dog had been put outside in the enclosed backyard about two hours earlier.
Suspects arrested for possession of stolen car
An off-duty member of the Whistler RCMP became suspicious of a vehicle in the Nordic Estates neighbourhood after two individuals were seen sleeping in the vehicle at roughly 12:30 a.m. on June 25. The RCMP checked the plate and identified the vehicle as being stolen in Chilliwack the previous day. A 36-year-old female and 34-year-old male were arrested for possession of stolen property.
Vehicle stolen in Whistler recovered in Squamish
Squamish RCMP deployed a spike belt on Highway 99 on Monday, July 1 after they were alerted by Whistler RCMP that a stolen silver Mercedes SUV was travelling south on the highway, related to a break and enter reported in the resort.
The original call came in around 4:30 p.m. after a relative of the owner of a home on Old Mill Road drove by a house and noticed a strange vehicle parked outside. The Whistler RCMP is also investigating another break-in to the area, as well as the attempted break-in at that property.
The suspects fled in the vehicle.
The vehicle itself, which was reported stolen in Surrey the day before and failed to stop for police, it drove erratically and dangerously through Squamish just after 5 p.m.
The police established a roadblock with spike belt, forcing the vehicle onto Commercial Way. The occupants of the vehicle fled on foot, but a 27-year-old Abbotsford woman was arrested soon afterwards at Walmart.
The male suspect was not located, and police are now looking for a white male with blonde hair and tattoos on his arms who was wearing a white t-shirt.
