A string of recent drug deaths in the Lower Mainland has RCMP warning the public of the possibility of contaminated drugs circulating through the region.

Two individuals were found dead by North Vancouver police on July 20 after apparently inhaling illegal narcotics. Investigators are testing the drug used to determine exactly what it was.

"Police believe that both died suddenly and suspect that the drugs they were using were laced with a deadly substance," a release stated.

Last week, at least eight people in Surrey overdosed on drugs in a 24-hour span.

The drug used is thought to be heroin, although it has not yet been confirmed if other substances were involved.

Police said the drug users showed immediate signs of overdose, and in three cases, "extreme life saving measures" were required. All affected are now recovering.

At this time, is unknown if the incidents in Surrey and North Vancouver are related.

Investigation into string of Whistler mailbox thefts continues

Whistler RCMP has dealt with at least a dozen reports of mail theft or damage to mailboxes this month, and continues to work towards identifying the culprits.

On July 15, Mounties were notified of three incidents of mail theft or damage to mailboxes on Nicklaus North Boulevard, Nancy Greene Drive and Fitzsimmons Road.

Access was also gained to a number of postal boxes on Alta Lake Road and Nita Lake Drive.

Less than a week later, on July 20, the string of incidents continued, with damage reported to mailboxes on Eagle Drive and Andrew Way. No entry was gained.

The same day two more reports came after a section of boxes was broken into on Lake Placid Road and on Alpine Crescent.

Investigators believe the rash of thefts may be related, and Whistler RCMP is currently working with other Lower Mainland departments to identify any possible suspects, police said.

No injuries following Kadenwood house fire

Authorities are counting their lucky stars after containing a house fire on Kadenwood Drive last week.

While police said the July 15 blaze caused extensive damage to the residence, nobody was in the house at the time and there were no injuries.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious, Whistler RCMP's Sgt. Pat Mulhall said.

Lost mountain cyclists make their way off Sproatt Mountain uninjured

A pair of mountain bikers who got lost in the area of Sproatt Mountain last week managed to make their way out on foot after spending a night in the elements.

After receiving the call from the bikers on the evening of July 17, Whistler RCMP advised them to spend the night on the mountain and wait for an aerial search to be carried out the following morning.

Shortly after the search was initiated with the help of Whistler Search and Rescue, the bikers made their way out on foot and flagged down a passing motorist.

"They were tired, but otherwise uninjured," said Mulhall.

Three bikes reported stolen overnight

Bike thieves were busy this week with a rash of thefts reported over the course of a single night.

On July 20, a bike was allegedly lifted from the Pan Pacific Village Centre hotel after a lock was cut, police said.

The bike was later recovered on Nancy Greene Drive alongside two other mountain bikes reported stolen from an underground parking garage, a red Rocky Mountain Altitude and black Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt.

Mulhall said the suspect or group of suspects broke into the secure underground area.

Break-in reported at Pemberton Secondary School

Police are investigating a break-and-enter to Pemberton Secondary School that was reported last week and resulted in the theft of a small amount of cash.

The incident was reported last Wednesday, July 15, after a suspect, or group of suspects, entered the school after smashing a second-floor window with a rock.

Investigators suspect the theft took place at approximately 6:40 a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Pemberton RCMP at 604-894-6634 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
