The first of two Atomic Ski and Snowboard Supercross races took place this past weekend in frigid temperatures and high winds, but the conditions were not enough to deter a record 183 skiers and snowboarders from taking part.

The participation was particularly strong in the younger age categories, with athletes from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, Whistler Blackcomb Freeride Club, and Whistler Valley Snowboard Club taking part — no doubt boosted by the recent addition of ski cross to the Olympic schedule.

In Ski Girls 13 and Under, the top skier was Kaylie Higgs of the WMSC, followed by Emma King, Rae Swette and Desirae Smith. Higgs was also the fastest skier in the qualifier on Saturday, out of 37 racers.

Ski Boys 13 and Under was the biggest category with 58 athletes. Logan Pehota placed first in the time trial, then went on to place first overall in the age category. He was followed by Dimitri Djurcic, Alexander Smith and Dalton Pehota.

In Snowboard Open 13 and Under, Wade McCracken placed first in the time trial and brackets to win the category. In the finals he was followed by Pheonix Abernathy, Albert Nelson and Kevin Burns.

Tyler Allison placed first in Ski Boys 14-16, followed by Felix Wolf, Ford Swette, and Max Horner. The four skiers also posted the four fastest time trial runs the previous day, although in a slightly different order.

Zach Astle won the Snowboard Boys 14-16 bracket, followed by Blake Rowe, Chase Harley and Logan Bikadi.

Marielle Thompson placed first in Ski Girls 14 to 16, followed by Bria Darlington, Ayako Kuroda, and Nicola Hulliweed.

In Ski Women 17 and Over, Corinne Kuhn was the top racer to beat, followed by Justin Parent, Christine Findlay and Julie Mountifield.

On the men’s side Kyle Jones was the fastest 17 and Over racer, followed by Adam Clark, Nozomi Nakashima and Stephen Wojtowicz.

For the 17 and Over snowboarders, the top four women were Myrica Hinich, Claire Thiebaud, Wakana Heema and Nicola Camerson. The top men were Ryan Espiritu, Yohei Sakurai, Jaime May and Jonathan Von Kraemer.

The next Atomic Supercross event is Mar. 23-24. Information is available online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com under the Events Calendar.
