Record turnout for Whistler triathlon

More than 300 triathletes were in Whistler on Sept.

More than 300 triathletes were in Whistler on Sept. 16 to take part in the annual Whistler Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon – a record turnout in a year that saw all previous records go out the window for triathlons around the country as the sport gains popularity.

Almost 200 people took part in the triathlon, which included a 750 metre swim in Alta Lake, a 20 km bike, and a 5 km run.

Brent McMahon of Victoria, racing in the 20 to 29 category, was a man with a mission, first out of the water, first on his bike and first in the run for a total time of 57 minutes 15 seconds.

Murray McCutcheon of Vancouver, also racing in the 20 to 29 category was second at one hour and three seconds. Jonathan Silcock of North Vancouver was next in the division, and 11th overall.

Gord Addison of Squamish, last year’s winner, came in 27 seconds after McCutcheon to take third overall and first in the men’s 30 to 39 race. Paul Cross and Andrew Tuovinen of Vancouver were second and third in Addison’s division and fourth and fifth overall.

Stan Faban of North Vancouver was the top under 20 athlete, finishing eighth overall. Victoria’s Justin Pommerville and Port Coquitlam’s Brendan Robertson, were second and third in the division and 25 th and 43 rd respectively.

Mark Shorter of North Vancouver was first in the 40 to 49 race and 18 th overall. Paul Suter, the first Whistler athlete to cross the line, was second to Shorter and 19 th place overall. Bruce Stewart of Kamloops was third, three spots back of Suter.

In the men’s 50 to 59 race, Brian Parkinson of Langley was first, followed by Don McIntosh of Port Coquitlam and Whistler’s Cam McCullough.

Rob Daniel of Vancouver was the lone over 60 competitor, finishing 142 nd overall.

Pamela Ens of Sidney, B.C., was the top woman in 1:06:44, racing in the 30 to 39 age division. Tracey Pope of Pemberton was second overall and second in her division, while Marie-Josee Cossette was third and third.

Kerry Spearling of Victoria was the top under 20 female in 1:13:30, which was good enough for 54 th overall. Whistler’s Claire Daniels was second in the division, followed by Noele Brooke-Webster of Duncan.

In the 20 to 29 race, Tiffany Fenton of Squamish was first, followed by Jen Rice of North Vancouver and Anne Lewandowski of Vancouver.

Teresa Toolsee was the top 40 to 49 competitor, followed by Lorraine Beese of West Vancouver and Jacquie Barry of Surrey.

Danielle Bouchard of Cobble Hill, B.C. was the top 50 to 59 racer, followed by Whistler locals Jill Jacques and Lynne Venner.

The top relay team was Pike and Waddell of Vancouver in 1:04:06, Steamin’ Joe of Surrey in 1:04:41 and the Pickled Cowboys of Victoria in 1:08:11.

The Whistler Kids Triathlon, which included a 200 metre swim, 5 km bike and 2.5 km run, attracted 20 competitors.

Maya Beaudry of Vancouver was the top woman and first overall. Amanda Hall of Langley was second, and Amanda Madu of Bowen Island third.

The top boys, in second, third and fourth overall, were Kurtis Vallee of Victoria, John Anderson of Dewdney, B.C. and Zachary Relf of Victoria.

Thirty people took part in the duathlon, which includes a 5 km run, a 20 km bike and another 5 km run. Lindsay Carswell of Vancouver was first overall in the men’s 20 to 29 category with a time of 1:15:35. Bradley Smith of Vancouver and Whistler’s Chris McKnight were second and third, or third and fifth overall.

Steve Olmstead of North Vancouver finished second overall, and first in the men’s 30 to 39 race. Rodney Kassel and Wayne Lackner were second and third in that division.

The top woman was Teresa Stockey of Maple Ridge in eighth place overall racing in the 20 to 29 division. She was trailed by Melanie Baago of Squamish and Virginie Sellars of Chilliwack, who were ninth and tenth.
