Re: “Don't fear the referendum

Party is not a basis for a democracy. The parties believe it is, which is why the first two referendums failed. In referendum three, the party list snout is stuck in every option, even tho the BC Citizens Assembly rejected party lists for voters lists. Likewise the BC CA rejected single member monopolies on representation, also intruded in every option. They are the politicians safe seat guarantees of jobs for life. That is what referendum three is about.

Re: “Gen X-ers could be the deciding factor for proportional representation in B.C.

BC referendum three is a totally dysfunctional war of words, a battle of misinformation, between two sides of self-serving parties. One thing you can be sure is that you will never learn the truth, or more than half truths worse than lies, because they are serving their own interests, primarily political job security. The collectivist party supporters are satisfied with the crumbs off the table, namely of being able to vote for their party or collectivity, rather than for individuals in order of choice to represent them.
The BC Citizens Assembly allowed for individual freedom of choice, but Single Transferable Vote is not an option, except in a hopelessly nobbled version, which intrudes the rejected MMP system of party lists and local FPTP monopolies. Both MMP components are the antithesis of democracy.
Smug place-holders have indoctrinated the public for evermore that their little local monarchies are the envy of the world, and such like tripe. Notice that they are partially retained by the so-called reformers, merely adding their undemocratic party lists to them career politicians from all sides. (Editor:)

Re: “How We Vote: Dual Member Proportional

The political scientist Max Cameron has already touched on the essential down-fall of DMP: it is too anomalous, which discredited, in the UK, the best losers form of MMP, proposed by the Blake report of the Hansard Society in 1975. Unfortunately, Canada lost its Proportional Representation Society (unlike Australia and the UK), so doesn't have an unbroken tradition of election system criticism. ------------ Alberta university, which subsidised the novice DMP exercise, might have known that, for over thirty years, the province had the infinitely superior Single Transferable Vote PR system in 5 to 7 member constituencies, in Calgary and Edmonton. Infinitely superior, from a democratic point of view, because the voters get to equitably elect the most popular candidates in order of choice. --------- The grant money could have been spent usefully on researching forgotten Albertan STV experience. ------------------- (Editor:)

Re: “Melamed settling into new role as Green Party president

Well, the truth can be unpleasant. Enid Lakeman, in How Democracies Vote, recognised that tranferable voting is transformative or evolutionary. It should be the Greens system of choice. But Greens helped the other parties stamp it into the ground in BC, after its recommendation by the Citizens Assembly. All the Greens and NDP want is their party fix with a Mixed Member Proportional system: unscientific and undemocratic.
