Riding for a reason

Bike season kicks off Friday with crit, slideshow fundraiser for CT scanner

On Friday, May 11, members of the mountain bike community are organizing a fun mountain bike criterium on Cut Yer Bars, to be followed by a slideshow, fundraiser and social.

The sign on for the criterium is at 5:30 p.m. at Myrtle Philip school. Riders will do at least one lap of a course on Cut Yer Bars before marshals start cutting off riders. The last riders standing will race for first place. Slopeside Supply is hosting the criterium, and the post-ride festivities.

Following the criterium the event will move to Dusty’s at 8 p.m. for a slideshow of the 2006 Samurai of Singletrack, featuring pictures taken by riders, spectators, and three professional photographers covering the event. There will also be a raffle and a game of bingo, with proceeds going towards the campaign to purchase a CT scanner for the Whistler Health Care Centre. DJ Ruffian, a.k.a. Ian Ritz, will be providing the music.

The cost is $15 including the criterium, or $10 at the door to the post-party. That includes a bingo ticket, and extra bingo tickets and raffle tickets will be available.

Prizes include an airplane drop at Spruce Lake with Tyax Air, a Banshee frame, bike components, and other items.

The fundraiser is being called “It Could Happen To You”, to remind local riders that head and spine injuries can happen to anyone.
