The Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association (WOVA) spiked the 2007 season last week with the Bloody Rippers taking the recreational championship title on Monday, and the Sandy Beavers topping the intermediate league on Wednesday. The Keg G.T.’s and Muchachas also won their overall pools. All teams were provided with prize packages with items donated by local businesses.

It was a successful year for the league with 30 teams taking part, and more than 200 members.

“Turnout has been consistent and the enthusiasm has been great,” said league coordinator Scott Rogers, who is hoping to expand the league again in 2008.

“Most impressive has been watching the quality and level of play across the board improve. Everyone has gotten better and that just makes the play more exciting.”

WOVA is hosting its season-end party on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Savage Beagle. The theme is TNT, which stands for Top Gun and Toga. The doors open at 9 p.m.

ON Sept. 15, WOVA is hosting a King of the Beach tournament at Rainbow Park. The cost to enter is $40 per team, and a cash prize will be awarded to the overall winner.

Blackwood is the master

Whistler’s Marjorie Blackwood is on her way to the International Tennis Federation masters world championship in Turkey in 2008 after taking the Women’s Outdoor National Singles title in the 50 and over age category in Vancouver last week. There were a record number of entries for the tournament — 530 — which left organizers scrambling to fit in all of the games.
