B.C. Rivers Day is teaming up with Arbor Day this year, and the Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group will be celebrating all weekend Sept. 29-30 with the Whistler Fishtival.
B.C. Forest Service, Rotary Club, Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Angling Club all invite the community to join in on the tree-planting fun on Saturday, Sept. 29. Meet at 9 a.m. at the River of Golden Dreams on Lorimer Road where group leaders will guide participants to several different sites. Only a low level of fitness is required to plant the seedlings. It’s an activity suitable for just about everyone – even the kids.
The fun takes to the water on Sunday with the Canoe Scavenger Hunt from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For the fourth year in a row, the Whistler Outdoor Experience Company at the Edgewater Lodge has donated all its facilities and canoes for the day. Fish and wildlife habitat will be marked with signs along Green Lake and the River of Golden Dreams. Boaters must identify sites on their map. A BBQ, face painting, fly fishing demos, displays and live entertainment will keep the land-lubbers happy.
If you prefer to get involved in a more environmental manner, Whistler Eco Tours is offering up their boats, free of charge, for a clean-up of the River of Golden Dreams on Sept. 30. The river is heavily impacted by canoes, kayaks, pedestrians, dogs and anglers over the summer season and needs some TLC before the winter.
The Watershed Management Plan for the River of Golden Dreams will also be introduced on Sunday. The plan has been developed over the past year by community and local government to help protect and restore the health of the watershed. The open house encourages comments from the public which will be incorporated into the plan, where appropriate, and be presented to Whistler council for approval. The draft will be on display at the Edgewater Resort from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 30.
Between The Sheets Behind the Grind
Come share in some of Whistler’s finest literary talent.
The Whistler Writers’ Group will host its first public reading Sept. 24 at Behind The Grind (backside of Uli’s in St. Andrew’s House).
If you’ve ever wondered where screenwriters, novelists, short story writers and poets get their ideas, this is your chance to ask questions. Each reading will be followed by a discussion period. There is no fee for the evening. Readings start at 7:30 p.m.
Daughters, lock up yer fathers
The Annual Pemberton Father-Daughter Dance is scheduled for Sept. 22 at Signal Hill Elementary. The evening includes dinner, dancing, music by DJ HayMak’r and a silent auction for all ages. Dads may also purchase corsages for their dates at the door.
The evening gets underway at 6 p.m. Admission is $20/couple or $25/family and tickets can be purchased in advance at Paper Works and Mystery Closet.
Ducks hit the water Oct. 8
The 10 th annual Big Brother/Big Sister Charity Duck Race takes place Oct. 8, sticking with a tradition of sending the plastic quackers into Fitzsimmons Creek on Thanksgiving Day.
The owner of the fastest duck will spend five nights at Intrawest’s Copper Mountain, including a three-day lift pass. Other prizes include a Westjet flight for two to specified destinations, two nights accommodation at The Westin Resort and Spa, as well as gift certificates from Sushi Village, Uli’s Flipside and The Keg.
Duck tickets are on sale each weekend at the Fitzsimmons Creek Bridge, which joins Whistler and Blackcomb Villages. They can also be purchased at Windermere Sea to Sky Real Estate in Marketplace, the North Shore Credit Union in Whistler and the Scotia Bank in Pemberton.
