The Resort Municipality of Whistler has no plans yet for the BCBC Lands at Alta Vista, municipal spokesperson Michele Comeau Thompson confirmed this week.
The BCBC site is the location of the former Capilano Highways works yard, off of Highway 99. Yellow and red trailers, used as waxing huts during last winter’s World Cup ski races, currently sit on the land.
Comeau Thompson said that until the transfer of the land from the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations to the RMOW takes place, the municipality will not be involved in discussions regarding the waxing huts.
The land is currently zoned for resident housing and institutional buildings. The RMOW believes its central location would be ideal for future institutional use, such as a works yard.
The agreement in principle between the First Nations and the RMOW was announced on Aug. 27. Through the agreement, the First Nations would receive municipal land adjacent to their Alpine North property, next to the future Rainbow neighbourhood. The First Nations plan to build housing on the sites.
The land transfer is still in progress, and Comeau Thompson said the municipality does not know how long it will take to wrap up. The transfer involves several parties, including the provincial government, who all have different approval processes.
Both Roger Lundie from the Lil’wat Nation and municipal administrator Bill Barratt have called the transfer a “win-win situation”.
