The Resort Municipality of Whistler wants to know what kinds of recreation programming and venues that people want, posting a survey this week that invites people to rank their priorities and make suggestions how recreation can be improved.
The survey is online at fluidsurveys.com/s/RLMP/, with the RLMP part standing for "Recreational and Leisure Master Plan." The master plan will establish priorities for the municipality over the next 10 years as facilities age, demographics shift and different programs and venues compete for funding.
"Recreation programs and facilities are high priorities for Whistler, and your input and ideas will help us to continue to improve municipal recreation programs and municipal facilities and plan for the future," said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release.
The survey comes after previous surveys to develop master plans for parks and trails, although all of the information will be integrated into Recreation and Leisure Master Plan.
This is the first significant planning process for recreation since the last Park Master Plan document from 1980 and 1996, which are credited for the development of over 30 public parks, hundreds of kilometres of trails and various recreational facilities and programs — including Meadow Park, sports fields and other venues.
The numbers of venues is also increasing. This past winter the RMOW opened a new permanent ice sheet at Whistler Olympic Plaza and last fall crews started work on a new public park at Cheakamus Crossing, Bayly Park, which will open this summer with a gravel soccer field, playground, sand volleyball courts, a multi-sport court, tennis courts and other amenities. As well, the RMOW is involved in several new trail projects with other stakeholders, including a new multi-use trail on Sproatt.
