Whistler council has nominated Dave Roberts, outgoing general manager of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, and Owen Carney, owner of Carney’s Waste Systems, for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medals.
Roberts, who recently accepted a job at the Ritz-Carleton on the Island of Maui after more than 13 years as the general manager of the Chateau, was nominated for his outstanding contribution to the community.
The Chateau has been a leading corporate citizen in Whistler and Roberts was instrumental in getting them there.
Owen Carney has also been a huge supporter of the local community from his work with the Whistler Weasel Workers to the Rotary Club in Squamish.
He has also been involved with projects on an international level, specifically projects in Central America.
The Queen’s Golden Jubilee marks a 50 year reign on the English throne for Queen Elizabeth II.
The medal will be awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada as a whole.
Approximately 46,000 Canadians will receive the medal. Nominations must be submitted by September 2002.
The medal is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and is made of gold-plated bronze.
The current Canadian effigy of the Queen is on one side of the medal and a stylized maple leaf on the other side.
