Rock ’n' box ’n' rave, May 17-18 What: Rock ’n' Box primer, Ravia Party When: May 17, 3 p.m. onward to May 18 Where: Whistler Conference Centre The Squamish Rock Boxing Club is in a clinch, it's the last round and it's behind on big-time points. In other words, the club is having rent trouble. To deal with the problem the club is having a fund-raiser at the Whistler Conference Centre. The club's goal is to teach to all active members the value of discipline, respect and fitness. It also hopes to continue giving Squamish youth an outlet for their energy, while learning self defence and the fine art of boxing. Unhappily, keeping annual dues low enough to be accessible to youth ($40 for adults, $25 for students) means butting heads with its landlord, BCR Properties, who would rather bite the club's ear off than let the club play for more time. So here's the plan: starting at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 17, the fund-raiser kicks off with a combination of live music and demonstrations of martial arts, boxing, aerobics and kickboxing. By the time midnight rolls around, it's time for Ravia, an over-night rave dance party complete with a fashion, retail, abuse awareness workshops, health and fitness information area. "No drugs, thugs or mugs," is the password. Healthy food tables will be there to keep the hungry growl at bay. The party continues to 10 a.m., May 18, with a picnic (location TBA) featuring DJ action. The whole weekend of activities closes up shop at 5 p.m. Monday The Squamish Rock Boxing Club is accredited with the B.C. Boxing Federation and the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. More than 100 young people have trained at the club over the past two years, with 30 training regularly. Bus packages to the rave are available from Vancouver, with special buses departing from Whistler every hour Monday from 6 a.m.
