Rock slide closes highway

Minor slide resulted in half-hour closure

One lane of Highway 99 in the Lions Bay area was shut for about half an hour on Wednesday morning, Nov. 12, when a slide blocked the northbound lane. The incident was reported at 7:30 a.m., and there were no reports of injuries or damage.

The slide did happen within the Sea to Sky Highway Improvement Project construction zone, but Ministry of Transportation spokesman Dave Crebo said no work was taking place in the area at the time of the slide.

Crews working for highway contractor Kiewit headed to the site immediately and cleared the highway. Both lanes were reopened by 8 a.m. As well, the company has sent geotechnical experts to the site to determine the cause of the slide, and whether any mitigation is required to prevent more debris from sliding onto the highway.

The highway was closed for four days this summer when an entire bluff collapsed on the highway. That slide was not in the construction zone, and the cause has yet to be determined.
