Drivers on the Sea to Sky Highway north of Whistler might have noticed some new traffic cones along the side of the roadway on Friday, Sept. 6. Those cones are there to block off an area of the Green Lake Bluffs that will undergo extensive rock stabilization work over the coming weeks.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is investing $638,000 in the project, about 6km north of Whistler Village.
"The Green Lake section of the Sea to Sky Highway has been subject to falling debris from exposed and loose rock," said West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy. "This project should reduce the amount of debris ending up on the road and improve safety for everyone who uses this important route."
The project involves the installation of rock bolts, horizontal drains and concrete (shotcrete) to prevent further erosion. As well, crews will scale the wall to remove as much loose rock as possible.
No road closures are expected, although there could be delays and single lane alternating traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily as crews work in the area. As well, highway speeds are lower in construction areas. Drivers are asked to obey traffic signs and traffic personnel when driving through the work zone.
The work is expected to be completed in late October.
