Vancouver alt rock veterans 54-40 are headlining the free concert series in this year's Great Outdoors Festival (GO Fest) on Friday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m.

The band's most recent album is 2011's Lost in the City. 54-40 will be inducted into two halls of fame this year — the 17th Annual Independent Music Awards and the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards.

Along with 54-40, indie band The Zolas and Latin dance band Mazacote performs on Saturday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

Vancouver's Dear Rouge plays at 7:30 p.m., and Vernon alt band Amistad performs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21.

All concerts will take place on the festival's main stage in Village Square.

Richoz Nominated for YWCA Woman of Distinction Award

Whistler's Joan Richoz has been nominated for a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in Arts, Culture and Design. Richoz, an original member of the Whistler Arts Council and the resort's first librarian, has been involved in the arts community for over 30 years. She currently coordinates the Sea to Sky Arts Councils umbrella group.

The winner will be named on May 29 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Whistler Arts Champion contenders named

Three finalists for this year's Whistler Champion of Arts & Culture have been named — Audain Art Museum's executive director Suzanne Greening, Mountain Life Media, and Mountain FM Radio.

The winner will be announced at the 2017 Whistler Excellence Awards at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler on Thursday, May 11. Other awards being presented at the event are Businessperson of the Year and Citizen of the Year.

Volunteer for Arts Whistler shows Arts Whistler is looking for volunteers to take on jobs such as ticket takers, ushers, merchandise sellers and ID checkers at events this April and May.

Events include sketch troupe Peter n' Chris and The Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. (19-plus), indie band The Boom Booms on Saturday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m., and flamenco artist Kasandra "La China" in La Tarara on Saturday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. The events take place at the Maury Young Arts Centre.
