This Sunday, to celebrate Earth Day, the Pemberton Rotary Club is coordinating its second annual community clean-up.

“Last year we had about 50 people, I’d like to double that and see 100 people,” said spokesperson Lisa Ames.

While the whole town will get a good once over, this year’s focus will be the southern entrance to town, specifically the grounds around the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Centre. The most significant aspect of the beautification projects will be the installation of an irrigation system to sustain healthy greenery at the very visible corner.

“The actual irrigation work will be mostly done throughout the week. The Sunday work will be filling in the trenches, applying topsoil and spreading the seed,” said Ames, emphasizing that no special skills are necessary. “Just show up, bring a shovel if you have one. Be ready to help and clean-up… everyone’s welcome.”

If constructing an irrigation system is more than you’re up for, Ames points out that the majority of work will be litter clean up.

“Now that the snow has melted, we’re seeing just how much litter there is, at the entrance to town and all over town.”

Interested parties will be directed to specific sites when they check in at the Visitors Centre, that will be turning into “garbage headquarters” providing people with gloves and garbage bags throughout the day.

In the days leading up to Earth Day community youth groups such as Sparks, Brownies and Guides, as well as the schools, will undertake their own clean-up initiatives.

While the day officially kicks off at 9 a.m., supplies will be available until 4 p.m. allowing even those with a minimal amount of free time to get involved.
