After helping out with the grunt work for his teammates in El Salvador, it was Will Routley’s turn to finish up front as the third race in the B.C. Cup road series was held in Burnaby on Sunday. Routley came away with the win, his second B.C. Cup triumph of the season.

According to Routley, who rides for Symmetrics Cycling, it was all according to plan.

“There were seven (Symmetrics riders) in the race, but only three of us were staying home the next couple of weeks for the provincial championships this weekend and another B.C. Cup race after that,” he said. “The idea was for one of the riders staying local to win, and get some points in the B.C. Cup series.

“The team made the race as hard as they could for the whole workout factor, and in a lot of ways it was like training for the nationals. I felt pretty solid the whole day and got the go-ahead.”

The course was difficult to race as a team, with 20 laps of a 5.5 km loop that included some tough climbs and descents. There were no flats on the course to recover and rest while drafting other riders.

“That suits me pretty good, for some reason, but it makes for a hard race,” said Routley.

The previous week Routley raced in Washington state, and placed 11 th in the time trial, ninth in the criterium and seventh on the road, all the while helping teammate Svein Tuft consolidate his lead in the North American standings.

Routley’s priorities this season are the nationals and Super Week, which includes the Tour de Delta, Tour de White Rock, and Tour de Gastown. Routley placed second in the Tour de White Rock two years ago, and wants to win at least one of the three events this year.

“It’s good to be feeling strong in local races while still training hard through the week for nationals and Super Week,” he said.
