Rugby alive and kicking in Whistler

Rugby in Whistler? Strange but true. The Whistler Hoary Marmots have been in existence for 14 years now and are still going strong. Actually you might say that Whistler is in fact a haven for rugby talent.

Rugby in Whistler? Strange but true.

The Whistler Hoary Marmots have been in existence for 14 years now and are still going strong. Actually you might say that Whistler is in fact a haven for rugby talent. With locals from all over the world, in particular Australia, New Zealand, the U.K. – all great ruby nations – it’s no wonder the sport is alive and well in town.

The club is arranging 15-a-side friendly games with Vancouver and Lower Mainland sides over the summer, as well as some 7- and 10- a-side tournaments. Once again we will be hosting a Whistler’s 7’s tournament which boasts a $1,000 prize purse – which was won by Whistler by the way in 2000.

Players of all levels, ages and abilities are welcome, including girls. The club has had a girls’ team in the past and would like to run one again this year.

Practices will be a mix of fun touch rugby, a little fitness, some soft contact, and match training closer to game days.

Of course it doesn’t stop at that. Anyone who has ever been involved in the game is well aware of the "Apres" social aspect of the game, and after each training session the players can be found at a local watering hole in the village. Even if you don’t want to play, social members are always welcome.

The Whistler Hoary Marmots will be holding a fund-raiser night on May 23 at Tapley’s Pub, featuring a players auction and karaoke, as well as prizes and other entertainment. The money raised will go towards jerseys, balls and other equipment for the team. The dress code is your favourite rugger jersey, although soccer jerseys will be tolerated.

The season starts next week with training at Whistler Secondary School every Monday and Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. We’ll see you there.
