Talks a step toward safe community Whistler Secondary will be hosting two speakers on the topic of safe communities on Thursday, Sept. 30. The 7 p.m. talk will serve to kick off Whistler's new Safe Community Committee which will be a broad-based, community-directed group with three key targets: community safety, school safety and citizenship. Alix Nicoll and Andre Janyk are spearheading the move. "There is a real feeling that there is a need to keep our community safe for children and adults and to that end this committee is being set up as an umbrella group to oversee and direct a number of sub committees," said Nicoll. The speakers will be Vincent Stancate, co-ordinator of community accountability programs from the Ministry of the Attorney General, and Lola Chapman who organized the Streetcleaners, a crime prevention group in Maple Ridge. The Streetcleaners eventually became the Maple Ridge Youth and Justice Advocacy Association. Chapman was awarded the Canada Certificate of Merit in 1995. She is also a volunteer with Victim Services and sees crime prevention as an aid to victims and the community.
