It isn’t Woodstock, but organizers of the Pemberton Music Festival aren’t taking any chances.
This weekend up to 40,000 concert goers a day can take advantage of free safe sex advice and devices, as Options for Sexual Health provides assistance from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. on festival days. .A full staff of nurses, educators and volunteers will be on hand to supply condoms, lubricants, and other materials. They will also provide Plan B emergency contraception pills that can be used up to five days after unprotected intercourse or if a condom breaks to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
Daily workshops will be held on site, and there will be an “Ask the Sexpert” booth to handle questions from festival-goers.
As well as a centre on the concert site, Condom Roadies will be walking the festival grounds with safe sex supplies. They will hand out more than 10,000 condoms, as well as other information on safe sex.
“We hope that everyone brings more than sunscreen as protection and stays well lubricated in those areas that rarely see the light of day,” said Kristen Gilbert, a sexual health educator for Options.
Surveys of music festivals have found that sexual activity is a large part of the outdoor concert experience for many attendees, and that the majority of activity takes place on Friday night.
