The deadline is fast approaching for the Sarah Burke Foundation's "Up and Coming Scholarship Award."

The $7,500 scholarships are awarded to two young winter sports athletes. Among other things, the athletes must demonstrate financial need, be 18 years old or younger, and contribute to their community.

The foundation has been providing financial support for young winter sports athletes since 2013.

Burke's spirit continues to live on, as evidenced on the #CelebrateSarah twitter hashtag, still peppered with posts about Sarah four years after her fatal ski accident in Park City.

She is remembered not just for her gold medals and for pioneering freeskiing for young girls, but also for her generous and beautiful spirit.

The application deadline for the Up and Coming Scholarship Award is Tuesday, Dec. 1. For more information go to sarahburkefoundation.com.

The foundation's board of directors, as well as an athletic scholarship committee, will make the final decisions and the winners will be notified by Dec. 15.

New Alpine Canada award to recognize excellence

Alpine Canada (ACA) has a new award to recognize outstanding athletes on the national team.

Called the 'Minogue Award of Excellence,' the award recognizes exceptional athletic commitment with athletes who demonstrate superior dedication to training, teamwork and community involvement.

The award is named after the past chair of the board of directors, Danny Minogue, who served as chair for five years. It will be funded by the Minogue family.

"Danny Minogue has provided ACA with exceptional leadership, passion and integrity while serving as chair of the board," said Mark Rubinstein, CEO of ACA, in a press release. "His commitment to our sport and our athletes has been long standing and we are proud to honour Danny with this award that will be a legacy for years to come."

The award, which will be presented at the National Championships, includes a bursary of up to $10,000.
