Saturday is election day

Whistler voting open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Conference Centre

Pique, Nov. 17, 2011

This Saturday, Nov. 19, B.C. residents across the province will go to the polls to elect local governments, school trustees, park board trustees and other municipal positions.

In Whistler, the election is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre. Voters will choose between six candidates for mayor, 25 candidates for six council seats and four candidates for two school trustee seats.

In Pemberton, the election is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pemberton Community Centre. Voters will choose between seven candidates for four council seats. Mayor Jordan Sturdy and school trustee Pat Mackenzie were already elected by acclamation.

In Squamish, the election is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Voters will choose between three candidates for mayor. Technically it was too late for Ron Bahm to withdraw his nomination so his name will appear on the ballot, though he is asking his supporters to vote for candidate Auli Parviainen. There are 23 candidates running for six council seats and four candidates for two trustee seats.

Preliminary results will often be announced on the evening of the election, and official election results must be declared from Nov. 21 to Nov. 23. Applications for a recount can be made from Nov. 23 to Nov. 28.

To vote you must be 18, a Canadian citizen, a resident of B.C. for at least six months prior to voting day, be a resident of the RMOW or a registered owner of a real property in the municipality for at least 30 days prior to the election.

Property owners whose properties are registered under a corporation are not entitled to vote. In the case where there are multiple owners on a title - such as a time share - only one of the owners (with the permission of the majority of other owners) is entitled to vote.
