Schoals new Squamish regional development officer

Former outdoor operator steps into new position

Instead of guiding tourists down white water rapids, in his new position as regional development officer with the B.C. Centre for Tourism Leadership and Innovation in Squamish, Tim Schoals will be guiding people toward new tourism ventures.

Hosted by the Squamish campus of Capliano College, the BCCTLI is a focal point for province-wide tourism education and innovation.

A former outdoor expeditions operator, Schoals said the centre "is providing timely and exciting ways to build capacity in our tourism work force and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

"Because there are so many things going on in the corridor," Schoals said, "the biggest challenge for me will be determining the most efficient use of my time to make the best things happen."

The regional development officer will work with Royal Roads University, Dr. Brian White of Capilano College and students in the college’s Whistler-based tourism leadership program. Schoals will be based in the new Squamish Adventure Centre that opened last summer.

An avid cyclist and first-time father to five-month-old daughter Evelyn, Schoals says he unfortunately missed the Test of Metal registration this year, but also enjoys hiking, ski touring and cooking.
