Nothing but good things have been said about the technical and flowing course on Burnaby Mountain that was featured in the Cardiac Classic Sunday, June 28. It was the third race in the B.C. Cup series, but was also selected to host the 2009 Provincial Championships. It was shorter than other events, with most riders completing the course in under two hours.
Two Whistler riders took titles this year, with Keith Ray winning the Master 40 to 49 race and Tony Routley taking the Master 50-plus category. Both race for Team Whistler.
From Squamish, Lauren Rosser won the Junior Women 15 to 18 race, and Mo Lawrence won the Under 17 men. Both ride with Team Squamish.
Several other athletes participated, many of them riding strong in their categories.
In 30-plus Citizen Men, Squamish's Sean Michel placed seventh out of 27 riders in 1:20:09.
Whistler's Tyler Allison once again bypassed the junior categories to race as an Elite, and placed fourth in that category in 1:44:24, just 28 seconds off of the podium.
Jesse Melamed placed third in Junior Men 17 to 18, while Squamish's Jarrad Wilhelm was one spot and 13 minutes back to place fourth.
Kristin Drygas of Squamish was fourth in Junior Women 15 to 18, less than three minutes back of the podium.
Team Whistler's Mike Boehm placed second in Master 30 to 39 Men, just 46 seconds back of the win. Trevor Hopkins was fifth in that group.
Mike Charuk, living in Squamish but racing with Team Whistler, was second to Keith Ray in Master 40 to 49 Men by almost exactly one minute. Chris Lawrence of Team Squamish was fifth.
Craig Mackenzie was 10 th in Master 50-plus Men.
Rob Leigh and Quinn Moberg of Team Squamish placed second and third behind Mo Lawrence in Under 17 Men, with teammates Jereomy Pelletier and Aiden Davis placing sixth and seventh.
Kasper Woolley of Squamish was first in Under 19 Citizen Men.
Downhillers take on Mad Trapper
While cross-country athletes battled for provincial titles, downhillers headed to the annual Mad Trapper B.C. Cup races at Panorama Mountain Resort. Several riders found the podium, especially in the junior age categories.
In Under 15 Men Whistler's Alexander Geddes placed first overall, followed by Lee Jackson of Squamish and Jack Iles of Whistler. Matthew Scully of Squamish was 11 th .
In Under 17 Men Whistler's Max Horner placed fifth, with Jordan Gostell of Squamish ninth. Owen Scully and Kip Shortreed were 17 th and 18 th respectively.
In Junior Men 17 to 18 Craig Campbell of Squamish was fifth, Ian Morrison of Whistler eighth, Kyle Quesnel of Squamish 14 th , Jesse Ballhausen of Pemberton 16 th , Connor Macdougall of Squamish 18 th , Leo Brandvold of Squamish 24 th , Trevor Halvorson of Squamish 26 th ,
In Master 30-plus Women Squamish's Meghan Illingworth and Kari Mancer were second and third respectively.
In Master 30 to 39 Men Dave Hord of Squamish was fifth.
Whistler's Alex Prochazka competed in the Elite Men's category, placing fifth overall and just over three seconds back of the podium. J.S. Therrien of Squamish was 11 th .
Canmore Canada Cup
On June 20, Canmore hosted a Canada Cup cross country event. A handful of locals made the trip to that race, with Whistler's Tyler Allison placing second in Junior Expert Men by just 1.7 seconds. Lauren Rosser of Squamish was sixth in Junior Expert Women. Joanna Harrington placed sixth out of 24 entries in the Elite Women's race.
Some local athletes are also heading to the Mondial du Velo bike festival at Bromont, Quebec July 4-12 for Canada Cup cross country and downhill races, as well as World Cup events.
