Sea to Sky team second in B.C. Plate

The South Island team successfully defended their B.C. Plate title last weekend, winning 25 singles and doubles games over three days at the Whistler Racquet Club.

The annual women’s masters tennis championship tournament came down to the last few games this year, with the Sea to Sky team and North Island team tying for second place just one win back of the South Island players. The Vancouver team was fourth with 23 wins.

"It was really exciting to come down to the last few games the way it did," said tournament organizer and Vancouver player Diana Pallot. "Everybody had a fabulous time, just a lot of fun, and there was a lot of good tennis."

This is the first time the B.C. Plate tournament has been held in Whistler since it was founded in 1988, as well as the first time that the Sea to Sky corridor participated.

The tournament is comprised of three teams of three in different age groups, and each team of three has to play both doubles and singles games. Every player gets three games over the three days, with 96 matches played in total.

The tournament was such a success that the South Island, which will host next year’s event, is considering hosting it in Whistler.

"It was a really well run event, it was fun to be in Whistler, the folks at the restaurant were just fantastic and Marjorie (Blackwood) really went all out to make it one of our best tournaments ever," said Pallot.

The South Island team was led by Peggy Street, Caroline Goff and Ruth Neroutsos.

Blackwood, a three-time Canadian champion as well as a former pro ranked in the top-50, played on the Sea to Sky Over 40 team, along with Shelley Lister and Tess Geddes.

The other Whistler teams were Esther Gorman, Carolyn Tanksley and Rose Koning in the 45 and Over category, and Linda Henderson, Berta Horn and Doreen Watson in the 50 and Over group.
