Search halted for woman feared drowned

Fly-fishing trip turns deadly as two presumed drown.

Search and rescue volunteers have stopped searching for a missing woman on or near the Cheakamus River.

It is feared the woman has perished and her remains may be trapped under logs or other natural features of the sift-flowing river.

On August 6, at 3:43 p.m., Whistler RCMP was contacted by a commercial fishing guide who advised that two of her clients had fallen in the Cheakamus River and were swept away by the fast-moving current.

The incident happened about three kilometres east of Highway 99, 20 kilometres south of Whistler.

The Province Newspaper reports that the woman, who was fly-fishing fell into the river and the man jumped in to help her.The guide ran along the shore but lost sight of them and called police.

Search and Rescue was immediately activated and members trained in Swift Water Rescue techniques attended to the area by helicopter.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., Search and Rescue members searching via helicopter located the body of a male floating face down in the river. Searchers were able to get to the male in the difficult terrain and confirm that he was deceased.

At the time of the accident the river was flowing moderately and conditions on the river were described as hazardous.

The search for the woman began again first thing this morning using a helicopter and searchers in the water on kayaks.

But having thoroughly searched the river in three different light conditions, and at eye level on the water in kayaks, search efforts have been suspended.

Both are believed to the B.C. residents. No names have been released.

More to come.
