Residents of WedgeWoods in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Area C, just north of Whistler, may soon be able to build a carriage house suite on their properties, thanks to a secondary suite rezoning bylaw change under consideration by the SLRD board at its monthly meeting on May 27.
A staff report suggested allowing two suites in each property plus a suite in a carriage (three units) to compensate for the fact that illegal suites were being constructed. This would bring them into compliance and allow their construction to be overseen by SLRD staff, said SLRD Area C director Susie Gimse.
"If they are legalized at least they are up to code," Kim Needham, director of planning and development with the SLRD, told the board.
However, because of concerns around increasing density without further consultation, the resolution was amended to allow construction of a carriage house, with only one suite being permissible.
The zoning amendment passed its first and second reading. The bylaw will now be forwarded to applicable agencies and provincial organizations. Under the Local Government Act the decision does not require a public hearing.
