September breaks room night records

September 2015 is another one for Whistler's room night record books.

The month was up marginally over September 2014, which was the previous best September on record.

There were several factors at play this year.

Tourism Whistler's manager of communications Patricia Westerholm explained that the year's results were boosted by the late Labour Day weekend, which extended the summer vacation period by nearly a week, as well as returning festivals and events, such as the Whistler Village Beer Festival and GranFondo and new events like Mudderella.

Group business also helped tip the scales.

This was a factor in 2014 too when Whistler welcomed the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) conference in September. That drew 5,200 room nights.

There was no UBCM this year to bolster numbers, but the Whistler Conference Centre hosted a few large groups — BC Wood, the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development and TRIUMF, Canada's leading nuclear science research institute.

Saturday, Sept. 5, during the Labour Day weekend, posted the highest occupancy of the month at 91 per cent.

Tourism Whistler will be releasing its season-end summary at the end of November, once the October room night results are in.

It's too early to comment on room rates.

"However, all season-to-date performance indicators have outperformed the same months in 2014 and are above the 10-year average," said Westerholm.
