West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA Ted Nebbeling has landed the Municipal Affairs critic’s post in a shuffling of the shadow cabinet announced this week by Opposition Leader Gordon Campbell. Nebbeling had been the Liberal party’s Forestry critic. George Abbott, MLA for Shuswap, is the new Forestry critic. Abbott was also named house leader for legislation. Nebbeling’s new shadow cabinet duties will include housing, an area of special interest to Whistler where affordable employee housing is a perpetual issue. As Municipal Affairs critic Nebbeling will be keeping an eye on Mike Farnsworth, minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Farnsworth and other cabinet ministers have been meeting municipal officials at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual convention this week. Nebbeling was on Whistler council for 10 years prior to entering provincial politics in 1996, four years as a councillor and six as mayor. He is on vacation and was unavailable for comment. In announcing the new shadow cabinet appointments Campbell said the Liberals’ priority is the "restoration of B.C.’s economy." The new "economic team" in the shadow cabinet includes deputy leader Fred Gingell, Finance critic Gary Farrell-Collins, deputy Finance critic Ida Chong, Employment and Investment critic Mike de Jong, Small Business critic Rick Thorpe and Labour critic Colin Hansen. Richard Neufeld, the former Reform MLA from Peace River North, is Transportation and Highways critic.
