Whistler Shinseikai Karate is hosting a qualifier at the Squamish dojo this Saturday, May 10, for their Spirit Whistler 2003 tournament in June. The qualifier is open to clubs from the Lower Mainland who are not recognized by the Full Contact Karate Association.

The rules will be similar to the Whistler Cup event held last year, with competitors squaring off in different weight classes.

There is no padding other than mouth guards and groin protection, and grappling moves are not allowed. Competitors are allowed punches to the body, and a free range of kicks.

Spirit Whistler 2003, which will take place on June 28 at Whistler Secondary School, will feature students from Whistler Shinseikai, as well as dojos from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Japan. It’s an open competition, which means that full-contract karate students from others schools are free to attend.

More information will be available leading up to the competition.
