Sigge's Payak cancelled

Conditions uncooperative for B.C.'s largest loppet

There will be no payoff for Sigge's Payak organizers this year.

Event chair Dirk Rohde said in a release sent out late Sunday night the race, originally scheduled for Feb. 28 and March 1, will be cancelled. Though there is enough snow for some skiing at Whistler Olympic Park, Rohde explained conditions weren't quite right for the event.

"Although there is some snow and skiing ongoing at the venue, we cannot hold a quality event on the limited terrain available," he reasoned in the release.

Organizers had considered bumping the loppet back a fortnight to March 14 and 15, but the forecast didn't appear set to co-operate.

"It's very disappointing to have to cancel, and we waited as long as we could to make the decision," Rohde said in the release. "It's very unusual for the Callaghan Valley to not have snow at this time of year, and we believe this is an [anomaly]."

The loppet, the largest in the province, had garnered about 430 registrations at the time of the decision.
