Site servicing on athletes village begins this week

Development corporation secures federal environmental approval

With its environmental approvals now in place, the Whistler 2020 Development Corporation can finally begin work on the athletes’ village for the 2010 Olympic games.

The development corporation got the go-ahead last week under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

Though officials had hoped to have all approvals in place by May in order to begin site clearing at the beginning of the 2006 construction season, project manager Neil Godfrey said the two and a half month delay shouldn’t pose any significant problems in getting the site ready for the 2010 Games.

“I think we’re going to probably still get what we wanted to get done this year,” said Godfrey.

The earthwork and blasting on the Lower Cheakamus site, across Highway 99 from Function Junction, could begin as early as this week.

Servicing the site is scheduled to begin next year, along with some vertical construction.

The athletes’ village will become resident-restricted housing following the Games.

A Pemberton company, Terrane Developments, is doing the majority of the work on site. Terrane is also doing some work at the Olympic alpine skiing venue on Whistler Mountain’s Creekside.
