Skateboarders forming association

Underground skatepark, community presence concerns

Skateboarding has come a long way from the fringe into the mainstream over the years, as communities have finally recognized skating as a legitimate sport and recreation activity by building facilities like skateparks.

In Whistler, the local skate community is looking to take things to another level by establishing a Whistler Skateboard Association. The WSA has scheduled its inaugural meeting for Tuesday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Maurice Young Millennium Place. Anyone who is interested in skateboarding is welcome to attend, and to run for the first board of directors. The WSA will need to fill the positions of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

One of the main issues is the creation and maintenance of the Creekside Underground Skatepark at Franz’s Trail, and how to best use the $10,000 grant the park has been provided by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. As well, the WSA will discuss ways to improve the skateboard community’s presence in Whistler, which could lead to more events and facilities.
