Skatespace returns to Whistler

The SkateSpace skateboard, inline skating and BMX competition is returning to Whistler for a second year, as part of a three city tour.

The SkateSpace skateboard, inline skating and BMX competition is returning to Whistler for a second year, as part of a three city tour.

The first event has already taken place in Toronto and the second event will take place this weekend in Montreal, crowning the Pro BMX and Pro Inline Best Trick champions and handing out more than $40,000 in prize money.

Whistler will feature pro and amateur competitions in both of these sports, plus the SkateSpace Pro Skateboard finals worth $20,000. A 13-foot ramp will be set up in Mountain Square for the vert finals, and the street finals will be held in the Whistler skatepark.

While Whistler may offer a smaller market than Vancouver, the success of last year’s event made Whistler an easy choice for this year. "Just the overall vibe was really positive, with the municipality cooperating and the fans turning out to all the events," says event producer Chris Fowler.

SkateSpace is chipping in $30,000 for new street course features, which will be delivered to the park once they’re completed. "The (features) are a lot sturdier and a lot more permanent than the ones we brought last year, and that’s a result of a good cooperative effort between SkateSpace and the muni. They’re one of the reasons why this event is back, and part of the reason why we’ve brought the skateboard championships."

Fowler is still confirming the list of athletes, but says that all the top amateurs from the events in Toronto and Montreal are being given flights in order to make it a true national championship.

All of the Whistler events, slated from Aug. 2 to 6, are free to the public, and will feature both pro and amateur categories and local riders.
